project requirements:

Designs should encompass two phases, the first being the basic pediatric clinic that will address childbirth and disease prevention and treatment. It will be a satellite clinic to support a larger medical hub. This design should be fully developed. The second phase calls for a way to convert the existing satellite building of Phase One into a larger medical hub/small hospital that will provide support for surrounding satellite offices. The design for Phase Two does not need to be as fully developed, but should clearly show how the requirements can be added onto the first phase.

Note: Areas are approximate and are given in square feet (sq ft).

General requirements:

1. Should be able to be built either on a flat or terraced plot

2. Include a perimeter security wall with front gate or other creative means of security. Due to extreme poverty, theft is a prevalent problem.

3. Have no more than 1 acre committed to building area

4. Include an outdoor family area(s) where families can sit during the day - should be grassy/shady and may be integrated throughout the plan (i.e. does not have to be contiguous). Many families travel great distances to visit the clinic, and may sleep overnight on site. A grassy area for families to sleep somewhere in the enclosure is encouraged. Include additional family sitting areas outside of the main rooms to serve as waiting areas.

5. Should use easily available resources, such as bricks/blocks, basic wood, rebar, corrugated metal sheeting. May also incorporate creative use of other materials, but should emphasize local materials and products that could easily be shipped for a low cost.

6. Power supply - preferably solar

7. Water supply - may include well and/or cistern to collect rainwater (if cisterns are used, need to be big enough to supply water for 6 months between rainy seasons or supplemented with well). Be creative with known methods of water collection and mechanisms

8. Does not have to be one main building, can be several smaller buildings

phase one:

Disease Prevention and Treatment:
  • Waiting area - inside or outside the building, but should be sheltered (roof) with seating
  • Reception area (80-100 sq ft) - need power source
  • 3 exam rooms (80-100 sq ft) - power, water
  • 1 HIV teaching room (120-150 sq ft)
  • 1 laboratory (40-60 sq ft) - power, water, window
  • 1 pharmacy (80-100 sq ft) - refrigerator, freezer, storage, power
Childbirth:
  • Infant ward (150-200 sq ft) - power
  • Children’s ward (200-300 sq ft) - power
  • Maternal ward (200-300 sq ft) - power
  • Cesarian/Birthing room (150-200 sq ft) - power, water
Teaching/Recreation Area - This should take the form of an outdoor pavilion or amphitheater area with roof

Kitchen (separate structure)

Parents take care of the basic needs of the children when in the hospital. They need an area with a wood-fueled stove or fire pit to prepare meals. The stove should have a method of smoke evacuation and a place for wood storage.

2 Pit Latrines (separate structure)

phase two:

These can be added to the above either by adding additional buildings or building upward or out from existing buildings. Initial spaces above can be converted to other uses in the final plan (e.g., pharmacy can move and initial pharmacy space can be used for additional exam room). Needs to be within the secured walled area.

Outpatient Area:
  • Reception (120-150 sq ft) - power
  • 4-6 exam rooms (80-100 sq ft) - power
  • HIV Counseling Room (150 sq ft)
  • Casualty/Emergency Area (200 sq ft) - power, water
  • Teaching/Recreation Area (as above)
Inpatient Area:
  • Neonatal ICU (100-120 sq ft) - power, water
  • 2 Infant Wards (150-200 sq ft) - power, water
  • 2 Children’s Wards (150-200 sq ft) - power, water
  • Shower and indoor (pit or western) toilets
  • Maternal ward (200-300 sq ft) - power, water
  • Birthing ward (200-300 sq ft) - power, water
  • 2 Cesarian Rooms ( 150-200 sq ft) - power, water
  • Operating Theater (200-300 sq ft) - power, water
  • Storage (100 -150 sq ft)
  • Services (can be integrated into the above areas):
  • Laboratory (100-150 sq ft) - power, water
  • Pharmacy (100-150 sq ft) - power, security window to interact with patients
  • Radiology (150-200 sq ft) - power
Separate Structures:
  • Kitchen for families (as above)
  • 4 Pit Latrines
  • Storage (200 sq ft)
  • Morgue (100-150 sq ft) - needs to be at edge of site away from patient areas
